Recycling to Future
Our natural resources are getting scarcer each day as a result of the increase in world population and consumption. It should be kept in mind that world resources which we have borrowed from our future, are not limitless and will be exhausted if spend carelessly. It is possible to use the natural resources efficiently by keeping the consumption of materials low as possible and recycling our waste. One of these materials, maybe the most important of them all, is recycled paper.
While the usage rates of recycled paper in some developed countries which have limited forests and cellulose resources, is about 75-80%, but this rate has only reached 50% in Turkey. It is in our hands to raise this rate for the future of our nature and also economic growth. (Resource: SKSV)
It is possible to recycle most of the paper types in the facilities with appropriate process designs. First quality papers are used in this process in order to achieve higher yields of outcome. Oily papers and papers soaked with sea water, carbon papers, bonding tapes which are not water-based, magnetic tapes and cards, sticky wax papers, used towels, toilet paper, tissues, hygienic sanitary pads and baby diapers cannot be used in recycling. Recycled papers are sterilized by the dehumidification process which is being realized with high levels of heat, and the chemical processes used in recycling.
Viking Paper which commissioned its recycling facility investment, implements a zero-waste and circular economy approach by turning waste paper into raw materials and creating economic recovery. Viking Paper, which does not compromise on its environmentalist manufacturer identity, prevents cutting of more than three hundred thousand trees a year with its Select Smart and Pufla branded “nature-friendly” tissue paper products. Thanks to its recycling technologies, the company has prevented about 6 million trees from being cut since 2010.
We are breaking new ground in the Turkish tissue paper industry in 2021, in line with our circular economy approach and sustainability vision with our new investment, Recyfiber®, which is a brand new technology producing hygienic papers from recycled cellulose fibers inside the beverage carton packages.
Thanks to our innovative technology, we recover the cellulose fibers in a beverage carton package which is made of 70% paperboard and produce eco-friendly, value-added hygienic papers from recycled cellulose for the first time in the Turkish tissue paper industry. Thus, we give new life to used beverage carton packages that would otherwise be thrown away and regain them to the industry, economy and our world while creating an alternative raw material for the tissue paper industy.
Benefits of Recycling
Used paper deteriorates within 3 months when it is thrown away. Recovery of used paper for the purpose of recycling not only provides raw material supply but also contributes to the economic development of the country.
The benefits of recycling paper to the economy can be listed as follows;
Tree cuttings are prevented and forest assets are protected.
Import of raw materials is reduced. Therefore, foreign currency saving is ensured and recycled paper is served as a new product.
Recycling of toilet paper, towel paper and napkin from scrap paper provides energy saving around 30 to 50 percent compared to the production of these products from virgin raw materials.
The reuse of scrap paper in paper manufacturing can reduce air pollution by 74-94%, water pollution by 35% and water use by 45%.
When 1 ton of used paper is not thrown away, but recycled and reused in paper production, in one year;
12,400 m³ of carbon dioxide elimination, the greenhouse gas in the air.
Preservation of 17 adult trees providing oxygen for 34 people.
1,750 Liters, saving the fuel-oil consumed by two families for heating purposes in winter.
4,100 KW / h, saving the electrical energy that 20 families will consume for a month.
12,400 m³ of oxygen gas production.
32 m³, saving water consumed by 3 families per month.
2.4 m³ saving from the storage areas.
We are able to recover used paper in high quality and hygienically with our “De-Inking Facility” investment realized in 2000, and contribute to the national economy.
Viking Paper, which does not compromise its environmentalist producer identity, prevents cutting of approximately 310,000 trees annually with its Select Smart and Pufla branded “nature-friendly” cleaning paper products.
